My poor little bunny (Cynamon) broke his foot almost 2 weeks ago... I feel so bad for him. He was outside (tied up while we were watching him) while we were at the cottage and my friends dog was also tied up... the collar for the dog snapped and the dog chased my bunny. My bunny freaked out and in the chaos managed to break his foot. It snapped all the toes off his ankle, then his ankle twisted and all the bones broke.
The first vet we took him to wanted to put him down but that wasn't an option for me. The second one we took him to was (and is) amazing - they reset his bones and put a little cast on him. It needs to stay on for 12 weeks (so just over 10 weeks left) - he gets pain killers every 12 hours and we take him for weekly cast-change appointments and monthly xrays...
If his bones don't fuse together properly they're going to try putting pins in them - but bunny bones are delicate so they say that may shatter the bones and make it worse... Worst case scenario they'll have to amputate! Hopefully it won't come to that though.
I feel so bad for the little guy...
Here's a pic of his initial xray and one of him in his cast...
Sad to hear, it's unfortunate. My dog got a hold of my sister's "dog" (if you can call it that, it's probably about the same size as your rabbit) and the little guy almost lost his eye. I felt awful about it, still do.
Hopefully the recovery goes well. Glad you're spending the time and money taking care of the little guy.
Couple weeks ago my neighbors had a hole in their outdoor rabbit cage, so for a few days there were these 2 rabbits running loose in my yard. I tell my neighbors, 'hey, you better fix that hole, otherwise they're going to get killed by a fox or hit by a car.' They say yeah sure we'll get to it one day....
Sure enough, the next morning there's a gruesome scene in my backyard (multiple rabbit parts and blood everywhere).... your rabbit definitely got off easy
Thanks everyone! It's been quite expensive so far but my friend (the one who owns the dog) paid for the first set of vet bills. I didn't want her to but it made her feel better - she's so upset about it... we don't blame her for it one bit, nobody could have known that the collar was going to break open!
He's doing so well! He doesn't seem bothered by the cast at all - the vet says he's a strong-willed bunny. He never stopped eating or drinking which was a great sign. He still tries to do the same things he used to do, even while dragging his leg behind him. It's cute, yet sad at the same time.
Faust, as we were way out of the city, the only clinic in the area only dealt with dogs & cats so they didn't know. They did a bit of research after looking at him and said that they found people who have fixed bunnies up before but they weren't in able to try it themselves. I appreciated the honesty in that they knew their limits and didn't want to risk making it worse... so we ended up having to wait and take him to a clinic near our house the next day (after a 4 hour drive) - they specialize in "exotic" animals... a little more pricey but totally worth it.
Oh... and that's terrible about your neighbours! How could they not care like that?! The poor little bunnies...

they can be trained to use a litterbox just like cats. but otherwise, yeah, they are nasty. their poop is nice little balls that don't make much of a mess at all, but their piss is toxic something fierce. i had one in college for a while (don't ever buy your girlfriend a rabbit for easter) and he was pretty cool - about twice the size of b_girl's.
i was already laughing at that long ass cast on poor bunny, but dirty just went to a whole 'nuther level! ALLSOME!!
oh geez... i haven't read this thread in a while, came on here to post a video of him now that his cast is off (he's so fast). Those pics are hilarious!
And yes, bunnies can be litter trained... mine is - although since he broke his leg we had to get him a massive litter box. We're hoping to be able to free him from his enclosed area soon too... and yes, their pee smells terrible, but the stuff I use in his box (wood stove pellets) seem to keep the smell contained as well... so changing his litter once a week = no smell
A video of him having a blast and running/jumping as much as he can in such a small area:

I agree with CB's comments. The pictures are just hilarious. Hope he gets better though. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?
and no... there will be no eating of this bunny... I don't care how tasty you guys think he'll be, or how good your recipes are or anything. He's off limits
